The Nords of Skyrim are well-known for their hardiness, strength, and their love of glory on the battlefield. The most impressive structure within Sovngarde is called the Hall of Valor, a direct reference to real Norse mythology. The ancient Vikings also believed that a fearless death would earn them a place in the Halls of Valor, where they could revel in their victories for time indefinite. Even the name Sovngarde is derived from the actual Norse terms ' søvn', meaning 'sleep' or 'rest', and ' gård', meaning 'place', hence the title's intended meaning being a 'place of rest'. Sovngarde is loosely based on the real-life Nordic legends surrounding Asgard, the realm of the gods, as well as Valhalla, a place where heroic souls are rewarded for eternity.
